30It must be noted that the person speaking cannot be a Christian for Paul has just gone to great lengths to show that a Christian is not a slave to sin, but a slave to righteousness. This passage is a continuation of Paul’s explanation of what it was like to live under the Law of Moses. That this is so is also clear from the “for” at the beginning of the passage which functions as the word “because” making the passage part of the argument he is developing regarding the nature of the Law of Moses and why we had to be set free from it.
